It’s that sunny and inspiring time of year.  Spring is gone and summer is officially here. The sunshine alone helps my mood and happiness.  I know I always look forward to Spring and Summer to get outside and utilize the space I have with my kids.  If you have a field, raised garden bed or containers to grow your seeds, you can start anything.

Today’s topic is about gardening.  Getting outside is good for the soul and it adds so many benefits to our lives.  And if you’re like me and have kids, it’s a great growing experience for them too.  It’s a way for them to work with their hands, get dirty and fun at the same time.  My boys actually enjoy gardening with me and I know they learn a lot starting seeds and putting plants in the ground.  They also like seeing the fruit or vegetables start to grow.  If I’m being honest, one of the simple pleasures I enjoy is going outside to water the garden and all my flowers.  There is something so peaceful about gazing at all I have created over time and admiring what will come to be.

I discovered a really awesome company called High Mowing Seeds that provides organic flowers, herbs, vegetables and fruit seeds.  You can see what they have to offer here.  One thing that I found particularly interesting about this company is their sourcing.  Their products come from independent farmers, not all companies do this.  The fact that High Mowing Seeds is a small business, I find that to be a full circle benefit for everyone.  This is a great way to start gardening in your raised garden bed or pots for planting.

When it comes to my flowers and garden coming to fruition there is so much satisfaction that comes from it.  I love to cut flowers for the house it just brings so much life to our home.  It brings me so much joy to provide these things for my family.  Now don’t get me wrong we don’t have a large space to have a field of dreams or anything, but what we can bring in is just fine.  I would love to one day have a few acres to have an even bigger garden, but I can just dream for now and do with what we have.

I also want to note, something I mentioned above.  You do not need to have a field or even a big back yard to homestead.  You can find ways to grow what is important to you and start there. What I mean by that is, if you are a flower lover then start with just planting flower seeds and fill your home with bouquets of flowers.  Flowers can brighten anyone’s mood and space.  If you have a passion for food, you could just start with herbs.  That is actually where I started.  I picked several herbs that my husband and I enjoy using and was pretty successful with it.  It’s all in what feels right to you as a starting point.  With each passing year you’ll start learning what worked and what didn’t.  As you learn, you’ll be able to grow your garden and provide for yourself and/or your family.  Like I’ve mentioned above you don’t need a lot of land to harvest your own food gardening in a raised garden bed or any size pots to start your herbs or flowers.

I really enjoy cooking and going out to my little garden to cut fresh herbs is not only enjoyable, but makes the food taste amazing.  Once you start cooking with fresh herbs from the garden you won’t be able to look at dried herbs from the grocery store the same.  One in particular is basil.  I love a lot of different herbs, but man o’ man does basil have the most fragrant smell.  My boys also love to go out picking and seeing the progress of the fruits of their labor.  It is truly a joy to us all..
